CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Frostfang’s roar vibrated their bones. Chunks of ice broke off the walls of the cavern and crashed to the floor.

Grimrock and Corvus planted their feet when the ground rumbled and threw them off-balance. Grimrock crouched, using one hand to steady himself. Corvus shifted to raven form, and shadows cloaked him. He twisted and danced to escape the falling rock and debris.

That all happened behind Eila as she clutched the Heart of Frostfire to her chest. The light artifact thrummed in her hands. She had expected flames to attack her as they had Corvus, but a white glow shone from within and the Heart beat in her hands, causing her heart to race.

Eila landed next to the dais and spun to face the dragon. Fire boiled out of Frostfang’s mouth, half blue, half orange, forming a yin-yang of ice and flame.

Eila’s skin prickled as the light from the Heart and its desperate thumps propelled her forward. Her hands glowed, and Eila gasped when a blue shield appeared in her left hand and a sleek silver-white longsword appeared in her right.

Eila stepped in front of Grimrock, crying out for Corvus to stand behind them, and they all ducked behind the shield as a torrent of fire that was both searing hot and freezing cold surrounded them. The shield miraculously held the fire at bay, though Eila was pushed back by its force.

The flames blinded them, and Eila wondered how long she could hold on. When she looked down at her chest, she saw that the Heart was resting against her as though it had melded into her clothes.

Grimrock growled. Corvus squawked. Frostfang continued to belch the conflagration like it would never stop.

Then it did. Frostfang’s onslaught died. Through her new shield, Eila saw a distorted dragon. Frostfang was now only three times Grimrock’s height. Although it was terrifying, its scales glittered like jewels, and its wings were snow white.

“The first test was passed,” Frostfang announced. “Few can withstand the Heart’s power. Your friend failed to harness its wrath.”

“Test?” Eila asked, her gaze flicking to the flaming portal that would let them go back the way they had come. “This was planned?”

“Planned?” Frostfang chuckled. “Oh, no, Eila Snowshadow. In an infinite universe, there can be no plans, only possibilities, and we must be prepared for every eventuality. What you hold grants great power, and none who are unworthy may wield it.”

Eila glanced at the glowing Heart, whose golden aura streamed into her. Her fears were allayed by its beating. She brought the shield closer to her body and held the icy sword out. She would conquer their foe and leave the chamber.

“What is the second test?” Eila asked, knowing the answer before the words left her mouth.

The dragon smirked, and smoke plumed out of its nostrils. “Defeat me.” No sooner had the dragon finished its sentence than it sped toward Eila.

Eila met it halfway and slammed the shield into its snout, preventing it from crashing into Grimrock and Corvus.

The dragon’s bulk knocked Eila askew, and she slid across the icy platform on her belly.
